Prof. Sir Peter David Gluckman, President of the International Science Council (ISC), will visit the Republic of Moldova from 15 to 17 April 2026, at the invitation of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. He will be accompanied by Dr. Salvatore Aricò, Chief Executive Officer of the International Science Council.

The visit reflects the ISC’s mission to advance science as a global public good and to strengthen international scientific cooperation in addressing complex global and regional challenges. It also underscores the importance of mission-oriented science and evidence-informed policymaking in supporting sustainable development, societal resilience, and informed decision-making, particularly in regions experiencing geopolitical uncertainty.

Born in Auckland, New Zealand, on 8 February 1949, Prof. Gluckman is an internationally recognized scientist and leader in science policy. His academic contributions span perinatal biology and physiology, pediatric endocrinology, and human developmental science. He has also played a seminal role in advancing science advice to governments and science diplomacy at national, regional, and global levels.

Prof. Gluckman served as Chief Science Advisor to the Prime Minister of New Zealand from 2009 to 2018 and as Special Envoy for Science at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He is currently Director of the Informed Futures Centre and a member of the Global Commission on Science Missions for Sustainability, contributing to the ISC’s efforts to promote mission-driven approaches to addressing urgent societal challenges. He is an elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Medicine and the UK Academy of Medical Sciences.

During their visit to Chișinău, Prof. Gluckman and Dr. Aricò will engage with the scientific community and policy stakeholders on strengthening the science–policy interface, enhancing science systems, and reinforcing the role of science in sustainable and inclusive development. In recognition of Prof. Gluckman’s outstanding contributions to international scientific cooperation and his sustained support for the academic community of the Republic of Moldova, he will be awarded the “Dimitrie Cantemir” Medal by the Academy of Sciences of Moldova.

The visit highlights the shared commitment of the International Science Council and its partners to advancing science for the benefit of society and to reinforcing science as a trusted pillar of global and regional cooperation.
