The Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova strongly condemns the Russian Federation’s war of aggression against Ukraine and its attacks on the civilian population and civilian infrastructure.
The attack on September 28, 2026, against the building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, located in the center of Kyiv, constitutes an extremely serious act directed against science, education, and innovation, as well as against Ukraine’s scientific community. An attack on an academic institution is also an attack on the fundamental values underpinning societal progress and on the intellectual and cultural heritage of a nation.
The Academy of Sciences of Moldova extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives as a result of this attack and wishes a speedy recovery to all those injured. We stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian academic community during these difficult times.
Attacks against civilians, research institutions, and scientific and cultural heritage must not go unanswered. The Russian Federation must be held accountable for these actions in accordance with international law.
The Academy of Sciences of Moldova reaffirms its solidarity with the Ukrainian people and the scientific community of Ukraine. We remain in close and continuous contact with the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, its research institutes, and Ukrainian scientists, who continue to pursue their scientific work under extremely challenging conditions and, through their efforts, contribute to strengthening Ukrainian society and defending democratic values.
Science, education, and culture know no borders and cannot be destroyed by force. They form the foundation of a future built on peace, freedom, democracy, and respect for human dignity.
Together, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine aspire to a future of peace, freedom, and prosperity within the wider European family.
